Kobo, a global eReading service, announced that Kobo E-Reader, its competitive e-reader App, now supports EPUB and PDF files on iPhone and iPad. This announcement would bring Kobo E-Reader in competition with Amazon’s Kindle software which only supports proprietary files.
Kobo has been a long-time promoter of open standards, and its products and services support the standard EPUB format. The new Kobo E-Reader now supports the eBooks in EPUB or PDF content bought from other services providers or sources such as Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, etc.
The EPUB and PDF files supported by Kobo E-Reader must be unencrypted. Kobo E-Reader supports the Apple devices running at iOS 3.2 or higher.
